Cottage Pie with Butternut Squash Topping

A comforting and nourishing meat pie for the colder months. I use butternut squash instead of potatoes for a more easily digestible meal. I like adding heart to this recipe to up the nutrition without changing the taste at all.

Cottage Pie with Butternut Squash Topping

Ingredients

For the Filling

  • 2 tbsp animal fat (butter, lard)
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 2 medium carrots finely chopped
  • 2 celery stalks finely chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground italian sausage
  • 10 chicken hearts minced
  • 4 anchovy fillets
  • 2 tbsp flour or other starch for thickening
  • 1/2 cup chicken meat stock
  • 1 tsp salt
  • grate of 1/2 a nutmeg

Butternut Squash Topping

  • 1 small butternut squash
  • 1 tsp salt
  • a small grate of nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup raw cream
  • 1/2 cup parmigiano reggiano
